Affordable nursery places to be made available for 4 year olds as Powys changes school admission age.
April 13, 2016
Ysgol y Bannau and Cylch Meithrin Aberhonddu in Brecon are pleased to announce that they will be expanding their Early Years and Foundation Settings based at the school to cater for children who were due to start school in September 2017 but are now not being offered a place until September 2018 following the changes announced by Powys County Council.
The nursery already offers half day places to 2 year olds, full ‘school’ day places to 3 year olds and will be expanding its provision to include 4 year olds from September 2017. As the nursery is managed on a not-for-profit basis, holding charitable status, it will offer an affordable solution to parents in need of childcare with sessions priced from just £8 per half day and Early Years funding providing up to 10 hours free care a week.
Speaking about the changes, Toni Borgia, a committee member for Cylch Meithrin said:
‘Ever since Powys Council announced their proposals to raise the school admission age we have been working to find a practical solution for parents who would potentially need an extra year’s childcare for their 4 year olds. Now that this is unfortunately a reality we are pleased that in conjunction with Ysgol y Bannau we can help plug the gap and offer quality, affordable childcare to 4 year olds.
Cylch Meithrin nursery is situated within the grounds of Ysgol y Bannau primary school on the outskirts of Brecon, benefiting from extensive outdoor space and a rural setting. Established in 1998 the nursery is committed to encouraging, supporting and nurturing children through creative play and exploration of their surroundings in a Welsh-medium environment.
Many families see their children continue through the school although this is not a prerequisite for attending the nursery. There are many benefits from the children’s familiarity with the surroundings, staff, ethos and language which make starting school a progression rather than a change. Staff are conscious of the use of English and/or Welsh in the home so tailor all communication according to the family preference. The nursery teachers are experienced and qualified in childcare and Early Years education and the nursery is regulated by CCSIW. Cylch Meithrin Aberhonddu is registered with Mudiad Meithrin the Welsh Early Year Specialists and is the only Welsh-medium nursery setting in Brecon and the surrounding area.
